It already been over half of the semester, when I look back, I have to exclaim how time flies. I agree with Lauren, “Any action without reflection is meaningless”, and I believe the reflection is a critical part in the creative thinking process as well.

Documenting and Inspirations:

I checked back my website to review each discovery log and notes and found that these posts just document my thinking process, about what my life looks like? What I saw every day? And Where’s my inspiration came from? When I keep documenting and I found it’s a good way to develop a habit to document logically and creatively when I push my self to discover something new or think something deeper. Gradually, I become more cautiously and curiously.

At the beginning of the semester, I went to the exhibition of Giacometti in Guggenheim Museum with Qi, we actually went to other exhibitions as well, but the most impressed exhibition is that one, which becomes to the research aim for our midterm. The creative thinking process actually happens every day and every moment, and each excited fragmentary experience pieces build our creative result. Exploration and Discovery is the start point in the creative process.


During the class, we actually get in touch with a lot of methods that can be really useful in our design and thinking process. The article Steal Like an Artist, help me to understand the relationship between creation and reference like the article said: “a new idea is a mashup or remix of one or more previous ideas”. It sometimes doesn’t matter we take something from others, but it does matter that we inject something new or change something in the previous work, which transformed other one’s work.

The SCAMPER Creative thinking Technique is really useful in helping re-create an idea. I used this technique in a lot of creative thinking process. I always keep in mind to substitute, adapt and combine something in the design process. Previously, I thought the creative design is just based on inspiration, but now I got the methodology of it.

Research Ability and Communication:

I improved my research ability in the last semester, because I start to raise more related problems, and in order to find out the solution or the reasons happened behind I have to dig deeper. Communication plays the important role in creative process, I just feel each time when I talked with Professor or classmates, I got a more clear direction or more creative ideas. Sharing part is interesting because during that time I learned a lot from other students and saw their thinking process.

9. Living Dead Media – Twin Lens Reflex

These week I  have big interests in Media Archaeology. 2 weeks ago, I went to the E-Waste to rent a piece of old media, and finally a picked a Twin Lens Reflex – Rolleiflex .


Rolleiflex is the name of a long-running and diverse line of high-end cameras originally made by the German company Franke & Heidecke, and later Rollei-Werk.The “Rolleiflex” name is most commonly used to refer to Rollei’s premier line of medium format twin lens reflex (TLR) cameras. The first Rolleiflex was introduced in 1929 after three years of development, and the Rolleiflex is popular among professional and unprofessional photographers.

However, the heyday of TLR cameras ended long before the era of digital cameras, and now Twin Lens Reflex Camera only used by a few professional photographers or hobbyists. Photographers usually use these camers to take black and white photos.

He photographed this lady in her living room by a big window that looks out over a lake. The light was low so he shot this nearly wide open, hand held. For some reason the finder on this camera is very bright and focusing was easy, even in low light. The bokeh is smooth and buttery.

I enjoyed this photograph and and I also like this solid, well machined manual camera because its a bright finder, whisper quiet shutter and stunning optics.

All TLRs are film cameras, most often using  120 film,  although there are many examples which used 620 film, 127 film, and 35mm film. Film camers has different optics effect than Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera. The flowing photo is taken by my father used Nikon D4S SLR in Jun 21, 2017 at Arhes National Park, Utah, USA:


Media archaeology has been known for its innovative work in excavating repressed, forgotten or past media technologies in order to understand the contemporary technological audiovisual culture in alternative ways. Although some old media is facing to the consequence of obsolescence, there are repurposed by a lot of contemporary artists.




8. Data API and Halloween

Halloween just past, there are a lot of interesting events happened and that inspired me to creat a simple creative coding sketch to celebrate the Halloween. The sketch is called Color Halloween and I used the data function of API to get the data resources, and the format of the data I used is Jason.


I would like to create a pumpkin with different color eyes and mouth when color data is picked.  I had a lot of problems this week, the first thing is I cannot load my coding result on the open processing. Actually, I also interested in many other data, but it doesn’t show even on local, and I cannot check the result, which makes me frustrating.

My original idea is when just use a text box to let the users enter their favorite color, and the color will be shown. However, I found out that, a menu button is much better in this situation because maybe sometimes people’s favorite color is not on the data list. I learn the menu function, and menu changed function from Professor’s code example, and that really works for me.

Now, this project is about when you pick your favorite color from the data list, then there will be a pumpkin with your favorite color’s eyes and mouth pop out, and a text ” Happy Halloween!” will also be shown in your favorite color.

Written Response to “Ira Glass on Storytelling 1 & 2”

In the video, Ira Glass talked two important aspects used in a good storytelling: a sequence of events and moments of reflection.

For the part of the sequence of event, he mentioned that each event, whatever how boring or how interesting the sorry is, it’s always a sequence of events, because things always happened along the timeline. When time moves forward, there’s always something happening next, so we need to raise the issue or problem and then solve the problem in the storyline.I agree with this point because I believe the sequence organization can help me have a clear logic. In the creative thinking process of design, a clear logic flow is really important in telling the story of design whatever a game or a product design.

Another tool he talked in building story box is a moment of reflection. That part pointed out why the audience listens to the story. A good storytelling not only needs to store a sequence of events but needs to focus on the bigger part and critical idea of the story. The satiric thing here is sometimes an interesting story has a meaningless reflection, but a meaningful reflection comes with a boring storyline. It’s important to get the balance between these two important elements in our creative thinking process, and I was really inspired by the video, and it helps me to thinking method of storytelling in the next step design process.

7.Day for Night Artist Series:“KNBC”, Casey Reas

This week I searched for an interesting project form, Casey Reas. Casey Reas is an American artist and is best known for having created, with Ben Fry, the Processing programming language. The book “Make: Getting Started with p5.js he wrote with Ben Fry, is now used by thousands of artists and designers. He is currently a professor in the Department of Design Media Art at the University of California, Los Angeles. He explores the art by using the contemporary lens of software and transform the conceptual, procedural and minimal ideas into artworks.

To Casey Reas, writing computer code and programming are not only the technical skills, but they are also important “thinking” skills for him to express the artistic ideas, and this contemporary artistic expression provides a great effect in both art and processing domain.


“KNBC” is an audio and visual distortion of television signals broadcast during December 2015. The signals were captured and archived at Casey’s studio in Los Angeles. The project combined the coding, art, and sound. This video captures a few minutes of a continuous, generative collage, and the intermittent sound can also bring the special feeling for audiences.

“It’s a very interesting and powerful way of thinking that doesn’t have a specific domain,” Reas explained for the project in the interview.


I really love the artistic expression he used in the KNBC Project, and it perfectly eliminates the gap between coding and art. Actually, his work reminds me another artist Ryoji Ikeda.

Ryoji Ikeda is a digital music producer in Japan, and he is also a leader of modern audio art. In his artworks, he studies frequency, noise, and space, which make Music as a feeling rather than pure melody and scores. He also did a lot of famous digital artworks, such as Time square – Test Pattern. In the working process, he also combines the math, the code, and the music.

Compared with Ryoji’s work, Casey more focus on the visual expression, and transforming some invisible signal into visual art. Many artists play around with the signal and some tiny details in our daily life, and coding just provides a medium which sometimes may become a better expression approach of these ideas than traditional painting or photography. Sometimes, just copying a classic painting or photo, coding processing can provide a totally different art form to understand the art and extend the art, which transform a lot of classic artworks.

Alberto Giacometti’s remarkable career traces the shifting enthusiasms of European art before and after the Second World War. As a Surrealist in the 1930s, he devised innovative sculptural forms. And as an Existentialist after the war, he led the way in creating a style that summed up the philosophy’s interests in perception, alienation and anxiety. Although his output extends into painting and drawing, the Swiss-born and Paris-based artist is most famous for his sculpture. And he is perhaps best remembered for his figurative work, which helped make the motif of the suffering human figure a popular symbol of post-war trauma.

My Game: Robot Ambiel

This week I was focusing on finishing my creative project’s midtern project, compared with the proposal I did last week, I changed some elements.  The background of the story is still the same,  and I got the inspiration of movie WALL-E. The story happens in 2805, Earth is abandoned and covered in garbage, its population having been evacuated 700 years earlier. Humans only have left behind WALL-E robot, a trash compactor robot, to clean up the earth. I really love the robot WALL-E in the movie, and this film also makes me think about the environmental problems on the earth. I would like to create a game related to the robot.

In my game I create 2 subjects, one is the robot, Ambiel, and the other one is the garbage.

Robot Ambiel: I created the robot Ambiel based on last week’s sketch. Instead of using arrow keys to control the robot, which I proposed last week, I change to set the robot as the mouse we use, and it can provide a more flexible movement user experience for players. Each garbage matches with different scores. When the robot collides the garbage, players will get the matched score.


Different Garbage: This garbage bounced back and forth on the screen. Different type of garbage related to different scores and different moving frequencies by identifying their different rotate speed and moving speed. The apple matched with 1 score, the can be matched with 2 scores, and the battery matched with 3 scores. The higher score means more rapid speed.

Challenges: It took me a lot of time to figure out the score collections because of some technical problems. For example, when I put the IsCollide statement in each function garbage, it doesn’t work. Or it always shows can’t identify some object. However, I got it finally 🙂

Other Problems to Consider: There are still some problems about score calculating because like some classmates said, when the player just put the mouse everywhere and don’t move it, garbages can hit the robot automatically, and the score will increase automatically as well.  Some people even find it’s much harder just to avoid the garbage. This makes me think other game rules I may use in the future, such as maybe putting some people to drop litter or maybe just let the robot avoid the trash. That’s the next step I want to explore is to make the game more interesting. Another thing is I wanted to create an ending for the game, maybe run out of time or another interesting element that may finish the game.


5. Ethnographic Reality – The Left Behind Children

This week I read a book called Factory Girls-From Village to City in Changing China, which a book related to make me to ethnographic research. This book makes me think about another common phenomenon in China – the left behind children. These children remain in rural regions of China, such as mountainous are in Guizhou Province. Their parents usually leave them to work in urban cities, and they are taken care of by grandparents or relatives.

In 2016, I went to Gui Zhou Province to do a landscape project, and during that time, I saw a lot of left-behind children in that small village. The video link I shared also tell a story of Tianmei, a left-behind kid – in Guizhou Province. I can totally feel how lonely Tianmei is. She really misses her parents, and the left bind children like her always seem like be more mature than other even-aged children in the urban city. Because of the lacking of infrastructure and parental support, they are facing a lot of challenges in their life. Who can guarantee the quality education and physical well-being for them? Do they have healthy social relationships in this environment? Many other questions need us to think deeper. Their parents have to leave them to earn money in urban cities, and that’s the reality of life.

I believe we need to pay attention to the issue of the left behind children. It is a kind of product of our rapid development time. Technology changes our lifestyle and social construction a lot, but at the same time, we also need to think about how to solve the real problems carried by social development. What can we do for them is a good question for us. Maybe we can donate for them, or like my friend become a volunteer to support their education.
